Mis-kick haunts Casey

By Stuart Teather
CASEY Comets could not upset ladder leader Doncaster Rovers in their State League Two South East clash on Saturday, going down 2-1 at Comets Stadium.
But the Comets were unlucky not to come away with at least a point from the clash, having matched the Rovers for most of the game.
Doncaster’s first goal came from what Comets coach Tony Saunders called “a defensive mistake”, while the second came from an apparent mis-kick.
“I’m not making excuses here — but from what we ascertained, he was trying to cross the ball in, he hit it with the outside of his foot by mistake and it curved in,” Saunders said. “When the keeper was going one way, the ball went the other.”
The Comets struck back late in the first half through Anthony Saunders — the coach’s son — but could not overhaul the margin in the second half.
Still, the Comets had plenty of chances, leading the coach to say his side was unlucky to walk away with a loss. “We had one cleared off the line, and we had three one-on-ones in the second half we didn’t capitalise on.
“I think we deserved to get something out of the game, at the very least a draw.”
Berwick City enjoyed a goal-fest in State League Three South East action, thumping Sandringham City 4-2 at RJ Sillitoe Reserve.
Regular scorers Jusuf Pekmezovic and Orlando Mejias found the back of the net, as well as Michael Franco and Adam Ewin, giving the Wicks a healthy boost in the goal difference column.
In even better news for the club, the win moved Berwick City into second place on the table — and into a promotion spot — with a one-point buffer over Peninsula and Springvale City, in third and fourth respectively. The news was not so good in Provisional League One South East, with both local teams recording losses.
Mornington thumped Doveton 4-1 at Dallas Brooks Park, with Leon Buhic the only Dove to score, while Monash Uni defeated Endeavour United 1-0.
Endeavour United and Doveton sit in eighth and ninth on the table, locked on nine points with 10th-placed Old Melburnians, however both have winnable games this weekend with Endeavour taking on Old Melburnians, and Doveton facing bottom side Ashburton.
