A NARRE Warren South man has spoken about the terrifying night he was threatened with a sawn-off shotgun outside his own house.
The 35-year-old, who wished to remain anonymous, pulled into his Amberly Park Drive property earlier this month and saw two burglars trying to break into his garage.
Instinct then took over for the father-of-one who tackled one of the men before pinning him to the ground and restraining him.
“As soon as I came round the corner I knew something was a bit strange because our sensor light was on,” he told the News.
“When I saw them I took my seat belt off and then put the car in neutral so I could pull on the hand brake and get out quicker.
“One of the guys bolted before I could get to him, but I ‘coathanged’ the other bloke and then tackled him to the ground.”
The burly boilermaker said he then gave the would-be-raider a “couple of good punches” before calling the police on his mobile phone.
However, things did not go as planned from that point on as the second thief went to a parked car and grabbed a gun.
“I was on the phone to the police telling them the situation and letting them know that I had one in my custody.
“But the other bloke came back and he just stuck his head around the fence and yelled out to let his mate go. Then he fired a shot into the air.”
The shot rang out in the night air and hammered home the seriousness of the situation to the man who quickly let his prisoner go.
“The heart was beating a little bit at that stage. I saw the gun and the sparks come out the end of it when it was fired.
“I decided I wasn’t going to risk it. Just the fact that my partner and daughter were going to be home any second.
“I would prefer they escape and my family stay safe,” he said.
The victim, who was not hurt in the incident, said he would definitely take the same course of action if he were ever in a similar situation.
“I haven’t worked for the past 20 years to buy a house and everything that goes with it, for it all to just be stolen.”
Police are hunting for both men who left the scene in a blue ’80s model Commodore which was last seen heading north on Amberly Park Drive.
The man who used the shotgun had brown collar length hair, a goatee beard and was wearing blue jeans and blue shirt.
The second man is described as being about 23 years old, 188cm tall, medium build, Caucasian, brown hair, brown eyes and about 90 kilograms.
