LORD Erin, trained by Grant Dalziel at Cranbourne, scored an impressive win in Sunday’s $40,000 Traralgon Cup, holding off fast-finishing Moe galloper, Crying Storm.
After the race Dalziel said he was likely to aim the horse at some of the ‘second string’ feature races around the country.
“He has weighed in five times in group races,” he said.
“He was narrowly beaten into second place in the Blamey Stakes (Group 2), Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Group 2) and Easter Cup (Group 3), finished third in the Sandown Stakes (Group 3) and fourth in the Carlton Draught Stakes (Group 3) at Morphettville.
Dalziel said the horse was not quite there as far as the big features went, but they would have a close look at races like the Launceston and Hobart Cups and even the Perth Cup.
“There is still plenty of good prizemoney around in those sorts of races, where he will not be running into the top liners,” he said.
Lord Erin is part owned by international basketball star, Chris Anstey, who was on course for the race.
“We’ve had him since he was a yearling and it’s just good to be on course to see him race, rather than watch him on the internet from overseas,” he said.
