A 20-YEAR-OLD man brutally bashed in Narre Warren will never be the same again, according to his mother.
Steven Grant suffered a major stroke following an altercation outside the Fountain Gate Hotel on Thursday, 30 March.
The former Hampton Park Secondary College student did not receive medical attention until the next morning when he was rushed to the Monash Medical Centre in a coma.
He later underwent neurosurgery to alleviate blood clots to the brain.
His mother, Karen Grant, said her son was now out of intensive care and was trying to come to terms with his injuries.
She said her son was having difficulty communicating and the right side of his body and his brain had been affected by the stroke.
The mother of six said her son had tried to walk on Sunday but was having trouble with both his movement and speech.
“He is frustrated as he is trying to speak and he can’t get his words out and he cannot move his right side,” Ms Grant said.
Mr Grant, or ‘Stewie’ as he is known, now faces long-term rehabilitation and his mother said it was upsetting to think that her son would never be the same again.
She urged anyone with any information about the incident or who may have witnessed the altercation to contact police.
Ms Grant said her son was very well loved and his girlfriend of two years had been maintaining a bedside vigil at the hospital since the incident.
“He is full-on and lived life to the full,” she said.
“Everyone loves him and he is a real happy go-lucky type of guy.”
As reported in last week’s News, the incident occurred between 9.30pm and 10.30pm outside the bus stop and taxi rank near the Fountain Gate Hotel.
Detectives believe Mr Grant was struck in the head several times with a glass bottle and also kicked in the head during.
Following the incident, Mr Grant went to his girlfriend’s house and told her he had been playing around with three friends when things turned serious and a fight broke out.
Police said it appeared one man had tried to break a longneck bottle and stab the 20-year-old, causing a minor wound.
Detective Senior Constable Brian Whitehead of Narre Warren CIU said security footage showed about 10 people had witnessed the altercation, and he urged them to come forward and contact police.
