A THIEF with an eye for gold jewellery was forced to hand over a stolen ring in Narre Warren last week after being confronted by alert sales staff.
The man stole the ring after tampering with the lock of a glass cabinet at the Cash Converters shop between noon and 1pm last Wednesday.
Detective Sergeant Garry Kear of Narre Warren CIU said the man then placed the $3000 ring under his armpit before sales staff noticed the ring missing and demanded that it be returned.
The man then gave it back before fleeing the store.
Det Sgt Kear said the man was inside the shop for about an hour and had spoken to staff and said he was looking for a ring.
Police believe the man waited until a sales assistant was distracted by another customer before stealing the ring.
He said the man appeared to be aged between 25 and 30 years of age, of Caucasian appearance and about 175-180 centimetres tall.
He was wearing a dark hooded windcheater, grey cargo pants and white runners at the time.
Anyone with information regarding the incident can contact Senior Constable Tony Meyers of Narre Warren CIU on 9705 3111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
