THIS semester’s theme for Year 8 students at Berwick’s Kambrya College may be Tread Lightly, but they seem to be doing anything but.
Year 8 teacher Libby Evans said students had even been staying in class beyond the bell to continue their latest project that has seen students ‘green’ their school.
This term’s theme focuses on the environment and in every subject and class the green theme has been incorporated.
“Every term we pick a theme and this is integrated into all of the students’ classes and subjects.
“From technology to even Japanese, German, science and maths the environment and related issues have been studied and discussed. Next term our topic will be the future,” Ms Evans said.
On Friday, more than 260 Year 8 students spent an afternoon outdoors, weeding, working on the vegetable patch, tree planting and setting up the birdnesting boxes they had produced in their technology classes.
Ms Evans said they had also looked at the recycling of paper and plastics as well as water saving.
“The students are getting right into it and they even stay beyond the bell to complete their work especially the birdnesting boxes in technology,” she said.
“It is important that students gain reallife skills. This is a subject that can help the school, help the community and help students to think about the effect they have on the world around them.”
