CRANBOURNE Cricket Club players won’t have to worry about injury this season, thanks to a State Government grant.
Players will soon be protected with new pads, helmets, and gloves after it was announced last week that the club was successful in its application for a $2000 VicHealth Sports Injury Prevention grant.
Club president Silvio Marinelli said the club, which fields seven senior and 12 junior sides, had introduced four extra teams this year and was in desperate need of new equipment.
“We are the biggest club in the area and basically we have to supply cricket kits for every team, just in case the kids don’t have their own equipment,” Mr Marinelli said.
“If we didn’t receive the grant we would have to fund the kits, which are worth up to $500, ourselves.
“This $2000 is exactly what we needed. It’s fantastic news.”
Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said Sports Injury Prevention grants aimed to improve the safety of sporting environments and reduce the likelihood of injury.
“Local sporting clubs are the grassroots of the community,” Mr Perera said.
“Without the commitment of volunteers, families and committed officials, our sporting clubs simply would not exist.
“Injury can be a barrier to participation in sport and active recreation, and many injuries occur when people are participating without access to injury prevention equipment recommended for their sport or injury prevention training.
“I take my hat off to the officials, members, participants and supporters of the Cranbourne Cricket Club.”
