A GOOD old fashioned girls’ night has turned into an excellent charity fundraiser for a group of Narre Warren mothers and friends.
The 20 residents of Oatlands Estate recently took part in the Australian Cancer Council’s annual Girls Night In which raises money for research into breast and gynaecological cancers.
With the generous support of local businesses, which donated a range of products including massages, MP3 players and food vouchers, the group managed to raise over $800, having a great time in the process.
Lisa Hopkins, who attended the night, said the ladies had a ball.
“It was absolutely fantastic,” she said. “It’s the first time we have done it and, after the success of this one, it will now be an annual event.”
Ms Hopkins said when one of her friends raised the idea the group was very keen to get involved. “Everyone here knows someone who has been affected by cancer,” she said. “It’s an issue that is very close to all our hearts.”
The Girls Night In is an initiative of the Cancer Council Australia to raise money for research into cancers affecting Australian women.
Last year $975,000 was raised through approximately 3000 girls’ nights, and this year the Cancer Council hopes to raise $1.6 million.
Ms Hopkins urged as many people as possible to get involved.
“It’s a great thing to be a part of,” she said. “All you need is a couple of hours and a group of friends and look what can be achieved.”
