Girls can get their kicks

FOOTBALL is not just a man’s world in Narre Warren South and many young women are pulling on their footy boots this season.
The newly formed team will play under the Narre South Lions Junior Football Club (NSLJFC) banner with their debut match scheduled for Saturday, 6 May at the multimillion-dollar Casey Fields sporting complex in Cranbourne.
Coach Peter Gajanovic said players were aged between 13 and 18 years and he was extremely impressed with their skill level and enthusiasm.
The team will compete in the Footy Pak Cup’s South East Division and Mr Gajanovic said the club was on the look out for more young female players.
“They all love football and the opportunity to keep playing the game.
“Girls can only play with boys until under 12s so this offers them something different and the opportunity to keep going with their football.
“Their coach was a bit sore after training last week but they are all very energetic,” he said.
Mr Gajanovic said many sporting clubs in Casey fielded women’s football teams and he was glad that Narre Warren South residents would now have the opportunity to play.
“A lot of clubs focus on the junior boys and after under-12s there is nothing for the girls to do afterwards.
“Statistics say the highest supporters of AFL are women not guys and it is great for them to be involved in the game.
“This team will help them with their fitness, make new friends and become involved in a club environment.”
The team trains on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Strathaird Reserve in Narre Warren South from 4.30pm to 5.30pm.
