Cranbourne’s Courtenay Gardens Primary School travelled across town to play Eumemmerring Primary School’s best for the right to advance to the regional finals and hopefully, the state championships.
The day belonged to Courtenay Gardens and they advanced to the Westernport regional finals with a 15.11.101 to 1.1.7 victory.
Despite the loss, Eumemmerring Primary School principal and team coach Wayne MacDonald said his kids had achieved just by making the district final.
“It was a great effort for the kids to get to that stage. I think it was the first time they got to that level, but the most important thing was the sportsmanship displayed by both schools,” he said.
Courtenay Gardens Primary School coach Jan Bruerton echoed Mr MacDonald’s comments.
“It was fantastic, they worked really well as a team. It was great sportsmanship shown by both teams and the kids just enjoyed it so much,” she said.
Courtenay Gardens played off in the Westernport region final last Friday in a threeway series against Cowes and Patterson Lakes Primary Schools.
After beating Cowes, Patterson Lakes Primary proved too strong in the remaining match, ending Courtenay Gardens’ hopes of advancing to the state finals until next year.
