Double m and double r: Arrgh

– Callan Date
DOUBLE m and double r, but only one m first time round. Confused? Well many people are when it comes to spelling Eumemmerring.
The Casey suburb tucked in between Doveton and Hallam has come in at No. 1 on a list of the most misspelt locations in Victoria. And it is ranked third in Australia.
The results come after Sensis released statistics about the 180 million suburb searches conducted on the Yellow Pages website in the first three months of this year.
A staggering 56 per cent of people spelt the suburb wrong when they typed it into the web.
Although it has one of the largest secondary schools in Victoria, and a creek that runs through several Casey suburbs, Eumemmerring is somewhat hard to spell for many.
This data came to light as updates were made to the online search engine capabilities of the Yellow Pages.
Changes have been made to the technology to make it easier for people who misspell business and suburb names or only vaguely remember names.
In Melbourne, nearly one in five people misspelt the suburb of Prahran while Holmesglen, Maribyrnong and Moorooduc also ranked highly.
Sensis senior product manager David Egan said feedback had been taken from online users and trends and searching behaviours had been looked at to come up with 10 key changes to the site.
“This multimillion-dollar upgrade will make it easier for people who only have a vague idea about the business they are looking for, either by name or location,” Mr Egan said.
He said Australia had some interesting place names because of our multicultural heritage and also the use of many Aboriginal words.
And Eumemmerring fits into that bracket. The meaning of the word is somewhat disputed but meeting place or watering hole is a common thought among many people.
