Cyclone support

CASEY council will donate $2000 to cyclone ravaged north Queensland and has urged other municipalities to follow suit.
Mayor Kevin Bradford moved that the council donate the funds to the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal at Tuesday night’s council meeting.
The funding will assist the community of Innisfail recover from the devastating natural disaster.
Cr Bradford also moved that the council write to the Australian Local Government Association and the Municipal Association of Victoria seeking their support to encourage all councils throughout Victoria to make a similar contribution to the relief appeal.
He said that when the Boxing Day Tsunami struck South East Asia Casey council, as well as many other municipalities, donated to the relief fund and it was time to look after those on our own shores.
“We are all fully aware of the disaster that took place in north Queensland,” Cr Bradford said.
“Here we have a tragedy in our own backyard and it is our duty to look after what is happening in our own backyard.
“I have heard and read in the news that this area will be affected for the next six years and this has placed a huge burden on their economy,” he said.
Councillor Mick Morland agreed and said Casey was fortunate to enjoy good living standards and should support those who have gone through a terrible experience.
“Australia donates money year after year overseas and it is time to look after our own,” he said.
