Crackdown on poor parking

CARS parked illegally at Hallam train station are blocking emergency access to the tracks and have prompted a police crack down.
Sergeant John Blackburn of Endeavour Hills police said more than 30 fines were handed out to illegally parked drivers in just three days and they would continue to regularly patrol the Hallam train station.
Sgt Blackburn said he understood that there were a limited number of parking spaces available at the railway station but people still needed to observe the law and be more considerate of other drivers.
“The major problem is that railway vehicles and emergency service vehicles cannot access the tracks if there is an incident as people are blocking paths and roadways and parking where they should not be.
“If there was an emergency and vehicles could not get through we would have to tow cars away,” he said.
Sgt Blackburn said drivers were also running the risk of having their cars damaged if they continued to block in other drivers.
“If drivers block in other cars they could risk having their car damaged if people act in frustration when trying to get out.
“It is an offence to park where they are parking and we will continue to patrol and clamp down on this,” he said.
Sgt Blackburn said fines ranged from $60 and $100 and police were visiting the station at different times of the day.
He said it also appeared that a gate had been broken and this had led to people parking in areas where they should not be.
Sgt Blackburn said he hoped the gate would be fixed shortly to deter further illegal parking.
