The list of speed camera sites in Casey is out in the open after the State Government released a list of mobile speed camera positions.By Rebecca Fraser
THE State Government has lifted the lid on the locations of mobile speed cameras in Casey.
On Monday, Police Minister Tim Holding joined Assistant Police Commissioner (Traffic) Noel Ashby to release a list of almost 2600 potential mobile camera sites in Victoria.
Mr Holding said the decision to release the sites was about being open and fair to motorists and to provide certainty to drivers that speed cameras were located on the most dangerous roads in Victoria.
He stressed that the day-to-day location of individual speed cameras would not be revealed, and said the road measures were not to catch out or trick motorists.
The new public listing also coincided with the release of Victoria Police’s speed camera rulebook.
The manual specifies that speed cameras should not be disguised by broken-down vehicles, signs, lamp posts, tree branches or dust bins and should not be placed on downhill sections of the road, on bends or within 200 metres of a change in the speed limit.
The State Opposition has said the Government’s new stance demonstrated its breathtaking hypocrisy, and the Liberal Party had repeatedly called for the locations to be publicly revealed.
Opposition Transport spokesperson Terry Mulder said little more than two years ago Labor was accusing the Liberal Party of encouraging speeding with this policy, but it was prepared to adopt that policy following a Liberal and media campaign.
Mr Holding has not said how often the list will be updated.
