Call for speed up online

A LOCAL group has the need for speed when it comes to fast internet connections.
But the Narre Warren South ADSL Action Group (NAAG) believes they are getting a raw deal from internet service providers (ISP) when it comes to access in their local area.
The group, led by local residents John McClumpha and Cameron Sach, has established an online petition in an effort to get an ISP to enable ADSL2+ connection in their area.
Mr McClumpha said Narre Warren South was one of the last suburbs in metropolitan Melbourne to be ADSL enabled and that trend looks like it will continue with the faster ADSL2+.
“The crux of that matter is that a lot of these ISPs have a demand register and if they get enough interest they will build the infrastructure required,” Mr McClumpha said.
He said about 60 people had already signed the petition with the group hoping to increase that number to about 200.
NAAG was formed several years ago with the aim of enabling ADSL services in the Narre Warren South region for use by both businesses and residents, he said.
“After a lengthy campaign and various negotiations with Telstra, a new exchange was built at a cost of approx. $10 million to service the Narre Warren South area.”
But more investment is needed to bring the area up to ADSL2+ speed, he said.
