THE charred remains of a man aged in his mid-20s were discovered in the boot of a burnt-out car in Narre Warren last Saturday.
Narre Warren East CFA members made the gruesome discovery after they were called out to a burning car on Mountain Flat Road about 6am.
Police said the man, who they believe was involved in an incident with several other people in Scoresby only hours earlier, died from injuries suffered before the fire.
Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Tremain said the registered owner of the burnt-out 1994 green Holden Commodore was helping police with their investigations.
“This is not an everyday occurrence. It’s an unusual one,” Det Sen Sgt Tremain said.
He said the body was burnt beyond any sort of facial recognition and further DNA and forensic tests would determine the man’s identity.
Mr Tremain said the area where the car was burnt would appear rural to someone not familiar with the road.
“It could be a person who didn’t know the area that well. It would appear quite remote during the night,” he said.
The Commodore came to a stop in a small culvert on the side of the unsealed road.
Neighbours reported hearing explosions about 4am before a resident noticed the smouldering car about 6am and called the CFA.
Anyone who may have seen the green Commodore, registration RBZ 682, in the Narre Warren or Scoresby area early on Saturday morning is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
