Boardwalk recalls Tooradin favourite

By Jim Mynard
CASEY mayor Kevin Bradford on Saturday officially named the Ron Mantel Boardwalk at Tooradin.
Cr Bradford said the late Mr Mantel worked tirelessly for the community and the boardwalk would note his contribution. It would become a landmark for Tooradin and highlighted his passion and achievements for the community.
Cr Bradford invited Mr Mantel’s partner, Mandy Garrard, to assist at the ceremony, and said Mr Mantel would have appreciated the benefits the walk would provide to people.
“He made an outstanding contribution to the community and had a passion for Tooradin and the water,” Cr Bradford said. .
“During his time as a councillor he was responsible for many projects in the Tooradin area, demolition of the old public toilets and construction of a new toilet block behind the Pelican Cafe.
“Other works included improvements to the hall, including a new floor and renovations to the supper room, a new bridge to the island and landscaping works.
“He pushed for works at the recreation reserve, including new netball courts and pavilion, sealing of the access road, new football change rooms and a covered spectator area, as well as restoration works at the Old Fisherman’s Cottage.
“While president of the foreshore committee he oversaw establishment of a new picnic area and playground, information landing, improved drainage and creation of a master plan for the recreation reserve.”
