HILLSMEADE Primary School’s Grade four students celebrated the opening of their giant snakes and ladders board last Friday after weeks of hard work and sewing.
Student Jordan Mitchell said her classmates had been studying the Guinness Book of World Records this term and had decided it would be fun to break their own Hillsmeade record.
She said the project formed part of their Discovery Learning program and students had been busy sewing together one-metre squares to form the board.
“We learnt lots of different ways to sew and have been working on it for the past few weeks.
“We also made snakes, ladders and dice,” she said.
Ms Mitchell wrote a letter to the News inviting them to the celebration, as she wanted other people to be “amazed and impressed” with the students’ skills and hard work.
“Making this board has shown us that we can do things that we have never tried and it was a terrific experience.
“It has made our Discovery Learning sessions more exciting because everyone looks forward to making the squares,” she said.
Grade four teacher Peita Whitehead said the snakes and ladders board now measured about 100 square metres.
“The students loved making the board and thought it was the best,” she said.
