Achievers on a high

By Callan Date
THE adage that you’re never too old to learn was proven true at Narre Community Learning Centre (NCLC) last week.
The organisation celebrated Adult Learners’ Week by naming its highest achievers in a special awards ceremony held at their Narre Warren base.
Sharon Lincoln took out the prestigious Learner of the Year award for her efforts in completing a certificate III in Aged Care.
NCLC officials said Ms Lincoln was a “conscientious, willing and eager student” who had been accepted into a certificate IV course in health at TAFE.
“Sharon has provided support and encouragement to her fellow students.
“She not only completes her designated assessments, but seeks to gain further knowledge in her own time,” officials said.
Other students recognised on the day included Learner of the Year nominee 90-year-old Connie Dodd who is involved with a social group for older adults and Sarah Cairncross who was awarded Tutor of the Year. NCLC CEO Wayne Hewitt said about 60 per cent of the group’s enrolment was made up of adults.
He said the nominations for the awards came from a range of people including staff, tutors and students.
“It is a very interesting day and probably the one day every year that we get to showcase some of the people and stories that exist at NCLC,” Mr Hewitt said.
“We are about life long learning and age is certainly no barrier for us,” he said.
