Graffiti free

By Jade Lawton
Since the adoption of its Graffiti Policy and Action Plan in 2007, the number of graffiti incidents across the shire has dropped by around 50 per cent each year.
Councillor Brett Owen hopes the revised Graffiti Policy, adopted by the council on Monday night, will see even further reduction is unsightly tagging and other forms of graffiti vandalism.
The revised policy will focus on the use of textas and thick markers, and council will investigate restricting the sale of such items to minors under local law.
It will also see the council work closely with local police to target graffiti hotspots and prosecute offenders.
“This is an issue close to my heart,” Cr Owen said on Monday.
“Our last action plan was adopted in 2007 – I am very pleased we have achieved 99 per cent of things in that action plan. I think we are doing a lot of good things,” he said.
“Cardinia is leading the way in graffiti removal, and other councils are looking at what Cardinia is doing.
“This council also led the way in restricting sale of paint and spray cans.”
Councillor Collin Ross said graffiti removal was important for community pride.
“I think it is extremely important that we keep the shire looking good, something people can be proud of,” he said.
To report graffiti on council managed buildings, parks and recreation facilities, or council signs and bus shelters, contact Cardinia Shire Council on 1300 787 624.
The council also offers graffiti removal kits and paint vouchers to private property owners affected by graffiti.
