MORE THAN 180 students from Bunyip, Garfield and Nar Nar Goon primary schools stood in awe of their own works of art at the Bushfire Memorial Art Project exhibition in Pakenham last month.
The exhibition showcased over 100 pieces of bushfire artwork and poetry in handcrafted frames made by members of Kooweerup’s Men’s Shed.
Cardinia Shire mayor Graeme Legge said the exhibition featured lasting artworks through children’s eyes for the community to reflect on. “It was a great way for all to experience local children’s creativity and emotions around the bushfires,” Cr Legge said.
“It was also a time to remember, one year on, the devastating Black Saturday bushfires that affected communities around Victoria.”
Students worked alongside professional artists Barry Dickens and Tara Kingston in art workshops last year in creating their masterpieces.
The council presented the project with support from the Federal Government’s Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and the Victorian Government’s Planning and Community Development Fund.
