Police roads alert

ACTING Traffic Inspector for the south-east, Ron Perrett, has urged pedestrians, cyclists and motorists to take care on the roads this winter in an effort to halt the area’s rising road toll.
Thirty-five people have died this year on the roads of Region Five, which includes shires from Frankston to East Gippsland.
Nine of the fatalities were in Region Five division 2, which includes the Shire of Cardinia and cities of Casey and Greater Dandenong.
“Whether walking, cycling or driving, you must give benefit of the doubt to the other person that they may be hindered by winter conditions,” Act Insp Perrett said.
“The winter season brings with it harsher weather, wet roads, decreased visibility, and the need for increased braking distance.
“With 35 fatalities so far on Region Five’s roads we want to ensure that pedestrians, cyclists and motorists are vigilant.”
Act Insp Perrett said motorists had a responsibility to ensure their cars and motorbikes were maintained for wet weather driving.
“Check your tyres, windscreen wipers and headlights are all in good working order.
“And pedestrians and cyclists need to be sure that they are wearing high-visibility clothing.”
