Tribute to shy volunteers

CARDINIA Shire Council mayor Bill Pearson delivered a personal thank-you to local volunteers at a special reception last Thursday night.
More than 220 volunteers attended the event held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre with representatives from more than 89 not for profit organisations across the shire.
In his address at the reception, during National Volunteer Week, Cr Pearson described the efforts of volunteers as extraordinary.
And he said many were often too humble about their contribution to the community.
“As volunteers you take on anything from selling food at the football, or coaching and transporting team members, to fire fighting, visiting the elderly and fundraising,” he said.
“On behalf of Cardinia Shire Council, I thank you all.”
Cr Pearson particularly acknowledged those volunteers who had contributed to fighting Black Saturday bushfires and the recovery effort.
He also acknowledged the life long volunteer work of Nar Nar Goon resident Bernie Byrne, who passed away on Good Friday.
