Bikers stalled

A PARCEL of council-owned land used by local auto and motorcycle clubs faces an uncertain future as VicRoads considers building a road right through it.
The Cardinia Shire Council has refused to commit the land to a long-term plan until VicRoads decides whether to construct a road connecting the Pakenham Bypass and Kooweerup interchange.
The land is being leased for grazing and the Pakenham Auto Club and Kooweerup Motorcycle Club are using part of the site underneath powerlines.
Cardinia Shire chief executive Garry McQuillan said the council had no plans for the site until VicRoads confirmed its plans.
“The property was acquired for future recreational purposes and the specific detail of this will be developed once VicRoads have confirmed their future road requirements that will confirm the amount of land that will be available for such activities,” he said.
Central Ward councillor Brett Owen said the land was ideal for a sports oval or other recreational activities.
He said the current set-up was working well.
“The current permit, which exists on that site is going well… complaints are limited if any,” Cr Owen said.
“I’m very impressed with the operation they (Pakenham Auto and Kooweerup Motorcycle clubs) have down there.
“I look forward to renewing their permit.”
However, Cr Owen was hopeful the auto and motorcycle clubs would have a permanent base near the freeway in the future.
The State Government has previously mooted the possibility of bringing a regional motorsports facility to the Cardinia Shire. It was examining land near Ryan Road, Pakenham, for that purpose.
Fellow Central Ward councillor Collin Ross said the land on McGregor Road would be valuable for open space or something similar.
