SKATERS and BMX riders can kick-flip and mono at a new facility in Pakenham.
Cardinia Shire mayor Bill Pearson declared open the skate park at PB Ronald Reserve last Thursday.
A community sausage sizzle marked the opening of the facility.
More than 60 young people worked with council’s youth services team and ConVic skate park design and construction on the plans.
Cr Pearson said the new skate park would cater for Pakenham’s growing population.
“Council has invested $230,000 in its design and construction and it has been a worthwhile spend,” he said.
As part of National Youth Week, the council will host competitions for skaters and scooter and BMX riders at the skate park on Saturday 4 April.
There are three age groups: Under 13, Under 16 and open. Prizes will be given to the first, second and third place winners in each category.
The competition is a major drawcard at the local National Youth Week festival held at PB Ronald Reserve on 4 April from 10am to 4pm.
National Youth Week celebrates the contributions of young people to the community and this year’s theme is “Make a Move.”
There are also art competitions and a three-on-three basketball tournament.
Other entertainment, which will be provided free of charge at the festival, include a local DJ, craft, amusements, entertainers, a barbecue and fresh fruit kebabs.
National Youth Week is supported by the Victorian Government Office for Youth and beyond blue: the national depression initiative.
The aim is to raise awareness of depression, anxiety and related drug and alcohol problems among young people.
Entry and registration forms for competitions are available from the Cardinia Shire Council offices located at Henty Way, Pakenham, and alternatively forms can be downloaded from www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/youth
