Dob in a hoon

RESIDENTS in Cardinia Shire are encouraged to dob in a hoon.
The State Government introduced a hotline that allows people to report rogue drivers.
Cardinia Shire councillor Brett Owen, who is chairman of the shire’s community safety committee, said the hoon line had been very successful.
“There is something people can do about drivers who use local streets as a speedway – dob them in to Crime Stoppers,” Cr Owen said.
Sergeant Nigel Atkins from Cardinia Traffic Management Unit (TMU) said police are notified about the drivers once they have been reported to Crime Stoppers.
“We have had some good results,” Sgt Atkins said.
He said it was important hoons were aware that drivers, not just police, can now catch them.
Sixty-five motorists in the Cardinia Shire have had their vehicles impounded since the state’s anti-hoon laws were introduced about two years ago.
According to Victoria Police figures, 29 of the motorists who had their vehicles impounded live in Pakenham.
A Cardinia Traffic Management Unit (TMU) spokesperson reminded motorists that the hoon laws also disciplined speeders, not just anti-social driver behaviour such as burnouts.
Assistant Traffic Commissioner Ken Lay said the legislation continued to be a success in Victoria.
He said half of Victoria’s hoon drivers were probationary licence holders and 98 per cent were male.
To report a hoon, residents need to record the date, time and registration number of the vehicle they believe he or she is driving dangerously and call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
