FEDERAL MPs had a close-up look at the Pakenham bypass works last week.
McMillan MP Russell Broadbent said he looked forward to the prospect of traffic flowing along the new road link by Christmas.
Mr Broadbent, Federal Minister for Roads, Jim Lloyd and La Trobe MP Jason Wood inspected progress on the bypass last Thursday.
Representatives of VicRoads and the contractors for the western section of the works, Abigroup, briefed the group on progress on the last major bridge structure, spanning the Cardinia Creek floodplain.
“Work on this 270-metre structure is almost complete with only the safety barriers to be put in place,” Mr Broadbent said.
“I understand pavement works along the whole length of the bypass are also 85 per cent complete.
“The most obvious indication the project is approaching completion is the diversion of traffic at either end of the project.
“Although VicRoads are not able to give a date for the opening of the bypass, I would hope this will happen in time for the busy Christmas holiday period,” Mr Broadbent said.
