Farmers’ market really in vogue

THE Cardinia Ranges Farmers’ Market continues to go from strength to strength since its inception five years ago.
The market, held at the Pakenham Racecourse on the second Saturday of each month, recently received a highly commended award in the Vogue 2008 Entertainment and Travel – Best Farmers’ Market Awards.
The honour follows recognition from the State Government of the market’s potential for expansion with a $20,000 grant from the Farmers’ Markets Program run by the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.
Fine wine and cheese, fish, fruit and vegetables, pork, beef and deer, juices, jams, cakes and plants are just some of the products available at the market which has developed a loyal following in the region.
Cardinia Shire Council mayor Bill Ronald said Vogue magazine’s vote of approval was evidence that the farmers’ market was regarded as one of the best of its kind. “This is a fantastic achievement for council, for the people involved in putting the market together, for the stallholders and the hundreds of residents and visitors who make it a must on their calendars each month,” he said.
“To run the market each month requires effort on the part of the local producers who participate and the community members who assist council staff with market operations. Agriculture is a major industry in Cardinia Shire and the farmers’ market gives people the chance to try to buy top-quality local produce.”
The next Cardinia Ranges Farmers’ Market will be held this Saturday from 8am to noon.
