PAKENHAM Police have urged motorists to take care around schools as children return to classes for the New Year on Wednesday.
The officer in charge of the Cardinia Traffic Management Unit, Sergeant Peter Garton said drivers needed to be aware that speed limits around schools were in force from Tuesday.
“People need to pay more attention on the roads and be wary that young ones will be in some cases going to school for the first time,” he said.
“They may be walking to school with a parent or older siblings,’’ he said.
Other children will be riding bikes to schools.
Speed limits of 40 kilometres per hour apply around schools and the speed along the Princes Highway near Pakenham Secondary College, Pakenham Consolidated Primary School and St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School is 60km/h during the key pick-up and drop-off times.
