SENIOR citizens have just become a whole lot safer thanks to a joint initiative of Cardinia Shire Council, University of the Third Age (U3A) and police and fire brigades.
The Cardinia Seniors Register is an initiative where elderly people can register their details with Victoria Police and receive information and support about living more safely and securely within Cardinia.
As part of the program, members of Victoria Police and CFA offer each senior who registers a free home safety and fire safety inspection.
In the future it is hoped to arrange outings and other functions for the members of the register. It is a great way for our seniors to get together and discuss safety matters in a social environment.
CFA brigade administration support officer Scott Hamilton said the council was right behind the program. “The councillors secured funding to help get the program operational,” he said.
“This funding has enabled the register to be put on a computer to enable easier communication with the seniors who are registered with the program.”
At the official launch on Thursday, more than 100 registered seniors were treated to a morning tea provided by U3A. The CFA gave each attendee a fire safety pack.
A home fire safety pack was raffled and won by local Pakenham resident Muriel Clark.
The program is the brainchild of former Pakenham senior sergeant Alan Dew, who recently relocated to Dandenong.
Any seniors wishing to join the program should contact their local police station.
