RESIDENTS in Cardinia will be shown how to take weed control into their own hands.
Cardinia Shire Council has funded a pilot program for weed control on roadsides for the towns of Upper Beaconsfield, Emerald, Cockatoo and Gembrook.
Three weeds will be targeted as part of the program including sweet pittosporum, ragwort and blackberry. A series of demonstrations and free advice will be held to show residents how to battle weed problems and protect native vegetation.
There will be a focus on issues such as identification of weeds, removal, chemical control, safety and local laws regarding vegetation removal.
The first demonstrations will be held at Emerald Lake Park, Emerald, and the corner of Paternoster Road and Emerald-Beaconsfield Road, Cockatoo, at 2pm on Saturday, 24 November.
Demonstrations will also be held at Gembrook Park, Gembrook Road, Gembrook, at 2pm on Saturday 1 December and at Upper Beaconsfield Recreation Reserve, Upper Beaconsfield, at 2pm on Saturday 8 December.
