English help at hand – my word

HELP for people to improve their English skills is available in Pakenham.
Courses run at the community centre at Living and Learning in Cardinia over the past 12 years have helped many people in the local community gain greater confidence with their English, according to LLINC manager Judith Brown.
The Certificate in General Education for Adults aims to develop English skills starting with basic skills to achieve successful communication in everyday life and written skills which can be used in further study and employment.
Ms Brown said some of the adult learners have come to the community centre in Henry Street, Pakenham, with very little knowledge of the English Language.
The course is most helpful for migrants who wish to improve their understanding of English.
Ms Brown said people from more than 32 countries have benefited from the course over the last 12 years.
By attending the course and participating in the small friendly classes, up to four days a week, students gain confidence in their abilities by participating in activities that relate to everyday living including cooking, outside excursions, art, reading, writing and maths.
Ms Brown said community workers and friends who may know people who would benefit from the training were welcome to refer them to the LLINC service.
Ms Brown said a tutor assesses the person’s skills at enrolment to create an individual program for the person within the group.
Ms Brown said existing levels of English understanding and the different cultural experience of participants was taken into account in designing the program.
“The aim is to help them gain the English skills to help them integrate as quickly as possible into their life in Australia,” Ms Brown said.
