RURAL commuters will no longer have to catch coaches to Pakenham after trains returned to the Gippsland line on Friday as part of the biggest upgrade to regional rail in more than120 years.
Transport Minister Peter Batchelor said major works on the line were now complete, signalling the end of major construction works for the regional fast rail project.
The new Vlocity trains are expected to begin running on the line in September.
Mr Batchelor said they would set new standards for comfort and convenience.
“New tracks and signals together with the fantastic new trains will create a new standard in regional rail travel and provide a more comfortable, reliable, safe and modern rail experience,” Mr Batchelor said.
Works on the Gippsland line have included upgrading 100 kilometres of track between Pakenham and Traralgon. At least 20 level crossings along the line have also been upgraded.
