PREMIER Steve Bracks and Olympic swim star Brooke Hanson have given the thumbs up to Pakenham’s new Cardinia LiFE aquatic and recreation centre.
Mr Bracks officially opened the $11.3 million facility while Ms Hanson took on a string of local challengers in a fun relay race during the celebration on Monday.
A who’s who of State and local government figures and community representatives joined residents and user groups for the official opening of the centre at the Toomuc Reserve.
Mr Bracks said the aquatic and recreation facilities marked an exciting new development for the growing community.
“It’s a great place to learn to swim and keep fit,” he said.
The centre’s design has been a talking point in the community — with some residents likening it to an aircraft hangar.
Mr Bracks said he was impressed.
“It is a stunning design, I reckon it will win awards, it has the capacity to become iconic.
“What happens inside here is going to give a lot of pleasure to many families for years to come.”
The centre includes leisure facilities including three swimming pools, a gym, aerobics room and a creche as well as cafe facilities.
“All pools have specifically designed access ramps so people of any age and ability can take part in programs for therapy, fitness and fun,” Mr Bracks said.
Minister for Sport and Recreation Justin Madden, who turned the sod when works began in 2004, said he had taken a keen interest in the project.
Mayor Bill Ronald said the pool was the largest and most expensive single project the council had ever undertaken.
Bunurong Land Council official Sonia Murray wished the facility every success.
Work on the project was halted during construction when Aboriginal artefacts were found on the site. Artefacts found have been preserved for display at the centre.
Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato and Cardinia shire officials and councillors were among the guests at the opening, as were representatives of the architects and builders.
The facility is managed by the YMCA under manager Michelle Young.
Memberships have passed the 600 mark.
