Looking back this week

Looking back 10 years to 2012: Bailee Weston, Chelsey Cul, Nathan Cull and Zavier Weston make friends with a clown at the annual Yakkerboo Festival in Pakenham.

30 years to 1992

Pakenham Bowling Club president Matt Cunningham created history when presented with the club champion trophy by Gary Elliott from Elliott Motors. Making the presentation, Gary commented that in all the years he had been associated with sponsoring the competitions, it was the first time the club championship had been won by the club president. Congratulations were also extended to the runner-up Leo Kallinikos. The president handicap award went to John Lia from runner-up Jack McFarlane, the minor championship was won by Bill Hollier over runner-up Don Buntine and Tom Joyce and Miles Cahill combined to win the club pairs. The women’s club champion was Wyn Fullager from runner-up Enid McFarlane and Hazel Timmins won the minor championship from Cynthia Manesta.

20 years to 2002

After 41 years in the business, Bayles Service Station owners Vic and Valmai Walker have decided to move on. The couple took over ownership of the service station in 1961, just 12 months after they were married, and said they were now looking forward to spending some quality time together. “We will definitely miss the place a lot,” Vic said. “We have made a lot of good friends here over the years.” Vic started his apprenticeship at the service station in 1956 and the couple moved into a house behind the garage five years later when they took over, meaning they were on all 24 hours a day. Former employee Stephen Bethune was taking over the business.

Crowd numbers were up as Pakenham’s favourite mythical creature came to town. The 36th annual Yakkerboo Festival was hailed a huge success, with more schools coming on board for the street parade. Festival president Michael Porter thanked the committee for their hard work. “In my first year as president I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “But let me say that this would not have occurred if it weren’t for the committee. We had a great mixture of old and new members.” Parade awards went to Battery Zone for the best commercial entry, Cardinia Primary School for the entry best dedicated to the theme, Kooweerup Secondary College for the most entertaining entry, the entry with most appeal to children was by the Australian Miniature Pony Society and the major award for champion float went to Bayles Primary School.
