Deck the halls

PAKENHAM’S new hall and library will open their doors to the public this time next year.
Construction of the $7.28 million facility, which also includes a U3A facility, is underway after Cardinia Shire Council awarded the contract to Core Properties Pty Ltd.
The ‘old’ hall, built in 1959, has been fenced off and site preparations have begun.
The council expects the buildings, on the corner of John and Henry streets, will be finished by the end of March 2011.
Mayor Graeme Legge said the project was part of the revitalisation of Pakenham’s CBD and was strongly supported by state and federal governments and the community.
“The project will complement the new $80 million Woolworths development in John Street, where construction is expected to begin in May,” Cr Legge said.
“Council will make every effort to minimise any disturbance in the area and I thank residents for their patience and understanding during the construction period.
“The ultimate aim is to provide an improved range of services and facilities for Pakenham residents and the wider Cardinia Shire community,” Cr Legge added.
Cardinia Shire Council has poured $3.6 million into the project, while the Federal Government contributed $2.5 million and the State Government $100,000.
The council is working with local community groups and organisations, including the Pakenham Town Hall committee, Cardinia Library Corporation, U3A and Pakenham RSL with regards to the planning and preparation for the facility.
Books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, internet access and a host of other services will be provided at the new library.
The multi-purpose community hall will contain an office, full commercial kitchen, a portable stage and a host of other functional areas, while the hall will provide meeting space for Pakenham U3A and other community groups and organisations.
The Pakenham Library is currently operating out of portables between the CFA running track and outdoor pool.
