Crash walk a wake-up call

PEOPLE affected by the two Lynbrook crashes that took five young lives are being urged to join a march next month to agitate for the duplication of Hallam Road.
The walk has been organised for 1 August after one crash took four lives and the second killed a young woman driver at the intersection of Hallam and Ormond roads. Residents will also have the opportunity to sign a petition demanding the duplication of Hallam Road.
Hampton Park resident Erika Maliki said that while the intersection was a trouble spot, all of Hallam Road needed to be upgraded.
“When I moved here 23 years ago it was a little country town. Now we are a major suburb but the road hasn’t changed. It needs to be fixed up to accommodate the growing population,” she said.
Ms Maliki said she expected a large attendance at the walk and said it was an opportunity to help the community heal.
“People have been in shock. I would love to see the whole community of Hampton Park, Narre Warren South and whoever feels affected by the tragedies to come out,” she said. Ms Maliki said it was a shame it took a tragedy to make residents take action.
People will gather at 9.40am at the Hallam and Ormond roads intersection. They will walk towards St Kevin’s Primary School car park at 10am after a minute’s silence to remember those who died.
