Students learning to win

By Kelly Yates
Narre Warren South P-12 College’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students took home the 2008 VCAL Intermediate Team Achievement Award for organising a fund-raising fashion parade and concert in memory of local girl Brodie-Lee Douglas.
The students were also recognised for raising around $4000 to support Vi Tran and Tara Sweetman from Windermere Child and Family Services and Tyler Fishlock whose well-publicised plight with cancer caught the attention of the students more than three years ago.
Assistant principal Rob Duncan, who was acknowledged for his long-term contribution to the VCAL program with the Chair’s Award, said the fashion parade took many weeks to organise.
“The students worked incredibly hard as a team to put together a fitting tribute to Brodie-Lee Douglas who passed away aged three and a half,” he said.
“The event was put on to celebrate her life and also to raise funds to support children with disability.”
The fund-raiser was sponsored by Planet Surf Cranbourne who gave the school $5000 worth of surf wear to model on the night.
Narre Warren South P-12 College has won six state awards in the past three years for its high quality program.
Around 180 students are studying a VCAL certificate at the school this year.
