A 21-YEAR-OLD Pakenham man suffered minor burns to his hands and arms after his car crashed and burst into flames in Officer South on Tuesday.
Advanced life-support paramedics and four CFA appliances were called to Duncan Road just after 11am.
“The car hit a fence, and then a fence post that was about 15 centimetres wide – the 21-year-old driver managed to get out,” paramedic Rob Damon said.
“A fire then broke out under the car. The man used his hands to try and put the fire out, and suffered minor burns.”
Mr Damon said the car was virtually destroyed and the man was distressed, requiring oxygen before he was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.
Officer CFA captain Gary Barnes said the car started a grass fire, which travelled 50 to 60 metres.
“We had to be reasonably careful because we thought the car may have been on gas, and they have a tendency to explode. But it turns out it was on petrol,” he said.
The only passenger, a male in his mid-teens, was not seriously injured.
