IT WAS autumn in Germany when Elisabeth Herrmann married her Polish bridegroom Zygmunt Jaskolowski in Karlsruhe.
Sixty years later, in spring on the other side of the world, the couplecelebrated their wedding annivers-ary on Saturday 31 October in Berwick.
The couple met at the end of the war.
Zygmunt had been a prisoner of war, and when he was released he joined the US Army, to be posted to Karlsruhe.
A year later, Elisabeth and Zyg-munt were among the brave young migrants who sailed to Australia with no English language but with lots of hope.
Their new life began in a migrant camp.
The Jaskolowskis raised their children, Ursula, Steven, and John, in Moorabbin before retiring to Somers and then moving to Narre Warren South to be closer to their family.
There, they joined the local seniors group, attending weekly meetings and enjoying the club outings.
At the party on Saturday at Ursula’s house were friends and family, which includes nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Zygmunt is 89 and Elisabeth 77.
