Principal hits the drums for charity

Beaconhills College will launch an inaugural Battle of the Super Bands charity event on Friday 5 September.

The event will see student bands from the College’s Pakenham and Berwick campuses in a musical battle, followed by a combined campus student band versing a group of staff musicians.

While students may feel confident, the staff band has a secret weapon in the form of Executive Principal Stephen McGinley, who knows his way around a drum kit.

Mr McGinley has played drums for more than 30 years and performed live, an experience he described as “a perfect blend of nervousness and fun.”

“I managed to spend a whole summer earning money from gigs and didn’t need to get another summer job,” Mr McGinley said.

The Battle of the Super Bands will kick off at 6pm, with each group performing four songs; from the 80s, 90s and 2000s, plus one they choose.

Proceeds from the event will go to the College’s Community Education Support Fund, part of the Beacon of Hope Foundation.

The fund provides financial help to families in need or those who are unable to access a Beaconhills education.

“I know that the students and the staff who have put up their hand to be part of the Battle of the Super Bands were really keen to do what they could to support our community, especially given all the work our students have put in,” Mr McGinley said.

“It will be really important to come along and support them in making a difference to the lives of others.”

The event is from 6 to 7.30pm at the Tony Sheumack Centre for Performing Arts at Beaconhills College Berwick Campus, 92 Kangan Drive, Berwick.
