Children with cancer lies, mother convicted

A mother who pleaded for money in Pakenham and across the country while lying about her kids having cancer will soon be sentenced before a WA court after being found guilty of reckless conduct with children.

Sarah Jayne Kelly is due to be sentenced in Perth District Court for having care or control of a child engaged in conduct that was reckless.

She will also be sentenced for a non-appearance before a superior court.

Ms Kelly had repeatedly lied about her children having cancer, where they were subject to changes in their appearance that were publicised to appeal for funds from the public.

Living in Pakenham in 2021, a gofundme page was launched at the time under the premise of supporting the cancer battle of one of her sons.

A report by the Gazette at the time shows this child with a tube inserted in their nose like a nasogastric tube that provides nutrients to people undergoing cancer treatment.

Ms Kelly claimed her son had been battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, where months before he had been “rediagnosed” and needed a bone marrow transplant to treat the faked illness.

The Starlight Children’s Foundation supported the family. As reported at the time, Ms Kelly said a package of toys from the foundation was sent to the wrong home and a public appeal to locate the parcel on social media would result in an outpouring of support from the community.

Ms Kelly is remanded in custody as court proceedings continue and a bail application will be heard on 16 September.

Sentencing is scheduled for 8 October.
