Berwick local Saskia Kirby recently took the stage in one of Melbourne’s most anticipated musical theatre events of the year—Legally Blonde: The Musical, which opened at The National Theatre in St Kilda.
Saskia played the role of Chutney Wyndham, joining a vibrant cast of emerging and established performers in the new production.
Thousands from across Melbourne came out to celebrate the opening night, which featured a glamorous pink carpet arrivals, to the show itself, and a VIP after party to close out the night. Attendees embraced the Legally Blonde-inspired dress code, channelling their inner Elle Woods in bold, confident, and unapologetically pink outfits.
Saskia believes her greatest achievement isn’t something tangible, but the personal and professional growth she has experienced since beginning her journey in singing, dancing, and acting.
“I think in the last couple of years especially, I’ve been really pushing myself out of my comfort zone and saying ‘yes’ to things that my first reaction is to say ‘no’ to, because of fear of putting myself out there,” she said.
“I think that how much I’ve grown since then is all a testament to pushing myself and getting involved with things that I wouldn’t have before!”
Founder and executive producer Andrew Gyopar said it was a genuine pleasure to bring this empowering and entertaining story back to Melbourne.
“At its core, Legally Blonde is about defying expectations and staying true to yourself, a message that feels more important than ever,” he said.
“In a world where conversations around gender equality, self-worth and resilience continue to evolve, Elle Woods reminds us that you can be strong and kind, smart and stylish, ambitious and authentic.”
For him, the dedication, the talent and heart of our cast has been nothing short of inspiring.
Aimee Forrest said directing Legally Blonde: the musical has been “a dream come true”.
“I’ve been able to work with a wonderful cast of some of the most talented performers I’ve ever seen,” she said. “They always give 110 per cent to everything and have delved deep and explored the worlds that we are creating on stage with clarity, grace and joy”.
