Q&A with LEGALLY BLONDE star Saskia Kirby.

What is your biggest accomplishment that you are most proud of?

I think my biggest accomplishment is honestly, not something tangible that I have achieved, but I think it is how much I’ve grown as a performer, and a person, since I first began singing, dancing and acting. I think in the last couple of years especially, I’ve been really pushing myself out of my comfort zone and saying ‘yes’ to things that my first reaction is to say ‘no’ to, because of fear of putting myself out there. I think that how much I’ve grown since then is all a testament to pushing myself and getting involved with things that I wouldn’t have before!

What events or activities would you recommend to people who want to explore or get involved in the arts?

I think getting involved with local companies or organisations, such as theatre companies or painting classes is a great way to get involved. You learn so much from others in these spaces as well. The arts are all about self-expression and bringing people together, and what better way to combine and experience these two things by getting involved in local groups!

What’s something you’re currently working on or excited about?

I would have to say Theatrical Inc.’s Legally Blonde the Musical! The show is opening very soon, and it’s looking absolutely amazing! The cast and creatives have put so much love into this show, and we’ve been rehearsing in the past months intensively to put this show together for audiences around Melbourne, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone

If you could effect change in your community, what would it be?

If I could effect change in my community, I would encourage people to get involved more with local things! Whether it be a local sports team, a community theatre project, a trivia night, whatever it may be! You can learn so much from the people you meet here, and form real friendships, as well as keeping the community flourishing! I think it often feels daunting to get involved with these kinds of things, but it’s important to put yourself out there!

What is on your bucket list that you’re still hoping to achieve?

I would love to be able to make musical theatre and acting a career for me someday! This has always been a dream of mine, and I have been working to make this a reality.

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

My biggest inspiration has got to be previous drama and singing teachers that I’ve had, whether that be at school or outside of school. They have been such a light in my life, and I don’t know where I’d be without them. My drama and singing teachers have always believed in me, even when I wasn’t as confident in myself, and the way they encouraged and celebrated the arts and the people creating it makes them an inspiration to me and many others.

Your show on the national stage is just around the corner. How are you feeling now that preparation is nearly over, and what’s the last message you’d like to share before you get on stage?

I’m so excited to share this show with audiences! If I could share a message before we take this show on to the National Theatre, I would say, Legally Blonde is such an incredible show, the writing is fantastic, the jokes are excellent, and the message about being true to who you are is so important. Although this show is so fun and upbeat, its key points are deeper than that, and that’s what makes this show so special.

What do you hope people will remember or take away from seeing your show live?

I hope people will leave with the message that you can be both authentically yourself and successful at the same time. A lot of the time we try to hide parts of our personality for others, but this show proves that being true to who you are is so important and can lead to true success!
