Unity at World Environment Day

Despite a chilly day and a whirlwind of a week across the world, locals from all walks of life banded together this weekend to support the environment.

The eighth annual World Environment Day was held at Officer’s Gurdwara Sahib Siri Guru Nanak Darbar (SGND) on Saturday, 14 June.

The day brings together members of many faiths, all volunteering their time to promote sustainability.

It was a special day of unity as the Indian community is grieving the lives lost in the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad last week. The SGND held dedicated prayers through the weekend in solidarity and remembrance.

This year’s Environment Day hosted a unique interfaith panel discussion on the importance of conservation with representatives from Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism.

The day included the annual group planting, 130 trees were planted this year on the temple grounds off Officer Road.

The event has planted approximately 2,750 trees collectively through the years.

World Environment Day at SGND also included many dignitaries from Cardinia Shire Council and state parliament, as well as a host of dedicated volunteers across the shire.
