Garfield battles to break par

GARFIELD GOLF

Last Monday was the coldest of the year so far at Garfield Golf Club with the gauge topping just 11.8 degrees whilst the rest of the week got off to freezing cold starts mostly ending up in mild days.

Proving that scoring is becoming difficult is the number of players playing to their mark is now on the decline which is typical for the winter months.

On Thursday a field of 94 all teed off at 9am with just five players bettering or equaling their handicap.

A less than impressive round of 32 points to a countback was required to finish in the money.

Peter Medwin returned to form getting the A Grade win with his 37 points whilst Terry Bull, a recent winner, won the B Grade event by a countback from Bob McKenzie also with 37 points.

Mahen Siritunga had the day’s best score of 39 points to win the C Grade event.

Just five birdies were achieved for the day on the par threes.

Michael Davey had a great week of it by turning out on Monday winning the B Grade event with a terrific round of 39 points then finishing second on Thursday for the C Grade event with another good round of 37 points.

These results come on the back of Davey also winning last Sunday’s comp with another good round of 35 points.

Whilst on Monday Nick Gray, having a god run at it, won the A Grade event with a great round of 73/ nett 37 points.

A final score of 32 points to a countback got you into the prize money.

On Saturday, another freezing start, a field of 138 players turned out for a game of single par where just seven players either played to or bettered their mark.

Best in for the day was Graeme Durran with a great B Grade winning score of +4 whilst Gary Bassett, one of the club’s consistent A Grade players, won the event by a countback decision from Nick Gray with a round of -1.

Ashley Greig, also having a good week, backed up Monday’s third placed A Grade result with 33 points to take out the C Grade event, also by a countback from Peter Bogart, with a great round of +3.

Josh Attwood won the D Grade event also with a nice round of +3.

A final score of -2 was the number to finish in the money and just seven birdies were scored for the day on the par threes of which Geoff Turner scored a pair of those.

This Saturday is a game of single stableford.
