Wood’s global role begins

La Trobe MP Jason Wood has been appointed Shadow Minister for International Development and Pacific Island Affairs, marking a new chapter in his parliamentary career while reaffirming his ongoing commitment to serving and strengthening Australia’s diverse communities.

“Firstly, I would like to thank our La Trobe community for placing their trust in me again and for the honour of representing them federally,” Wood said.

“I am deeply honoured to take on the role of Shadow Minister for International Development and Pacific Island Affairs under Sussan Ley’s leadership.”

He believes this role presents “a fantastic opportunity to amplify Australia’s commitment to strong, respectful partnerships internationally and across our region, particularly with our immediate Pacific neighbours”.

“My focus will centre on strengthening our partnerships across the Pacific, regional security and extending our support to other developing nations that look to Australia as a trusted partner,” Wood said.

His electorate spanning Cardinia Shire, Casey, and the Hills—is home to vibrant and diverse communities, many with deep connections to regions across the Pacific, Asia, Sub-continent Europe, Africa and beyond.

“In this role, I see a unique opportunity to strengthen those people-to-people links through cultural exchange, trade, education, and cooperation that benefits both local communities and our international partners,” Wood said.

“Our migrant and multicultural communities are our strength who serve as a living bridge between our neighbourhoods and nations across the sea.

“I look forward to working with our diverse communities and with our Pacific neighbours to ensure Australia’s international development program reflects our shared values and delivers real benefits for everyone.”

Wood’s previous role as the Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs, has given him “a deep understanding of how deeply connected our local communities are to their countries of origin and how international policy affects lives not just abroad, but also here at home”.

“It was a privilege to serve as the Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs,” he shared on social media.

“I wish my successor, Senator Paul Scarr in Multicultural Affairs all the best as he continues to support and work closely with our large and diverse Australian communities to develop meaningful policy.”
