Pakenham United will be ruing a missed opportunity to bank a road victory on the weekend after drawing 2-2 with Mount Martha.

The visitors kicked the first goal via Rohan Kumar at the 14-minute-mark and looked set for victory for the majority of the day, with an 89th-minute Omar Alshanquiti goal seemingly putting the game beyond doubt.

Chaos ensued thereafter, though, as Mount Martha scored twice in 50 seconds to level the scores and clinch a point from the jaws of certain defeat.

Coach Dean Alburey recorded a social media message on behalf of the club, following the match.

Hey Pakenham community, I just wanted to take a moment to apologise to you guys,” Alburey said.

“We know we need to be better.

“It’s one step forward, two steps backwards at the moment, we keep letting you down.

“We love the support you’re showing us.

“We’ll keep working hard trying to get better.

“It’s been a frustrating season so far, we keep showing glimpses of what we’re capable of.

“At the end of the day (there’s) no excuses, we just need to be better for you guys.”

The club came into the season with hopes of promotion, and while Pakenham sit a respectable fifth on the table with a 2-2-2 record, much improved on last season, it’s 11 points behind table-toppers Fortuna 60.

Most frustratingly, Pakenham have blown multiple opportunities for positive results as the club looks to take a step forward.

A clash with the undefeated Seaford is next up.
