Smoke forces garbage truck to dump load due to incorrectly disposed waste

An incorrectly disposed household item caused smoke inside a garbage truck in Pakenham, prompting a response from emergency services on April 2.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the site has been cleared thanks to CFA for their swift response.

Last year, numerous garbage trucks in Cardinia were forced to dump their waste due to fire or smoke caused by incorrectly disposed waste, with two occurring in the same week during January 2024 and another two in February.

Residents are reminded that flammable liquids, e-waste, and batteries must not be placed in household bins, as these materials can pose significant fire and health risks.

Cardinia Shire Council is urging residents to safely dispose of hazardous materials like electronics, batteries, and chemicals to protect both waste collection staff and the wider community.

Proper disposal options include:

– Flammable liquids: Drop off at upcoming free Detox Your Home events.

– E-waste: Recycle for free at designated e-waste drop-off locations, transfer stations, or through the bookable hard waste service.

– Batteries (including those in vapes): Dispose of at major supermarkets and other approved drop-off locations.
