Following an alleged knife attack in Pakenham on March 28, parents are growing increasingly fearful as police continue their investigation into the violent incident, which left an 18-year-old woman with serious injuries.
Police believe a female approached a group of people sitting in a park on Clifford Drive just after 1pm. The offender allegedly produced a knife and stabbed one of the group before leaving in a vehicle.
Police say the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be determined, and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Local MP and Leader of the Opposition Brad Battin said the violent attack in Pakenham is deeply concerning.
“My thoughts are with the young woman who was injured. No one in our community should have to fear for their safety in public spaces,” he said.
“This incident highlights the urgent need for stronger crime prevention measures and support for frontline police. We must ensure that law enforcement has the resources and powers necessary to keep our streets safe, while also addressing the root causes of violent crime.”
Gabrielle, who lives directly across the road from the park, was at home feeding her almost 5-month-old when she heard the sirens.
“I didn’t really think much of it because I often hear sirens on a daily basis in Pakenham until my two French bulldogs started barking at the front door and when I looked out the window, I saw police cars at the park, and they had taped off the area,” she said.
“It makes me so uneasy and feel really worried that something like this happened in daylight and it can happen again, especially to kids that often go to the park every single day. I’m a single mother that has two children and it makes me feel so anxious.”
Many residents noted the park is known for frequent fights and attacks, with the police constantly seen there, and the area often featured in the news.
Residents say the only way to fix the rising concerns in the area is to take a tougher stance on crime.
